Mr. Dolph had been the director of CBS sports for nine years when he was named commissioner of the league, then in its third season. He replaced George Mikan as the Commissioner of the ABA. During his tenure, he pursued merger talks with the National Basketball Association. The two leagues finally merged in 1976.
